"Defects Ignored by ASUS"
Pros: Very compact feature rich hardware
Cons: This product exempt from bright pixel guarantee
Summary: The unit I received has a bright pixel. This is annoying. ASUS customer service refuses to replace or repair this unit because it is not considered a "high end" product. They assured me this policy is consistent with other notebook manufacturer's policies. The representative's advice to me is wait a couple of months for replacement parts to become available and then have the unit repaired at my own expense.
The Linux OS (tailored Xandros) is extremely limited. The ability to add software is limited to a rudimentary software management application which only connects to the ASUS eee repository, which apparently has no software in it.
The wireless connection works very well, but the management application forces you to type the hexadecimal WEP key ever time you connect.
Aside from the LCD defect which ASUS refuses to acknowledge, and the locked down OS, I like this unit very much for the compact and quality feel of the hardware. The many USB ports, SD card slot, and the integrated wireless, and the processing power give this unit a great deal of potential.
I intend to install Xubuntu to install Ubuntu and repair the LCD at my own expense at the nearest opportunity.

We bought a mother board from Asus and when we paid $20 to send it back after it failed they insisted on "repairing it" and sending it back. Worked 5 days and failed again. Sent back for $20 with request it be replaced as astill under warranty and they wasted 2 weeks "repairing it" and sent it back to us. Would not work. Phoned them and they wanted to continue playing this game. I refused to invest another $20 in shipping it back to be "repaired," and they refused to replace it or cooperate in anyway. We will NOT ever buy any product of theirs again and recommend others avoid them like the plague.

That LCD problem sounds infuriating, and I can't comment on that. However, regarding the other issues. Regarding the limited software, however, it takes minimal tinkering to add xandros repositories confirmed to work on eee pc. All that, and more, can be found at wiki.eeeuser.com, a wonderful site that should be known to all eee users. In addition, regarding the wireless forcing you to enter the WEP key each time, if you use the internet taskbar icon to the right (the networking one rather than the wireless one) once connected, you can set the connection to go on boot, as well as connect to it without re-entering the WEP key.
