What I want from the new iPhone

Coming soon, the new me.

Another day, another 3G iPhone rumor. This time, the latest dish suggests that Apple CEO Steve Jobs will unveil the second generation of Apple's uberhyped iPhone on June 9, which is the first day of Apple's World Developer's Conference. And hold on to your hats fanboys and slamboys, as the gossip also predicts that the 3G iPhone will go on sale that very same day.

Unfortunately, we know very little about Apple's new products until the words tumble out of Jobs' mouth. Of course, we are certain that the new iPhone will added 3G and Microsoft Active Sync, both of which are sorely needed features, but beyond that all is uncertain. Yet, I can dream of a few features I'd like to see in iPhone 2. They may not be glamorous, but these capabilities could do a lot to make the handset better. Check out my latest On Call column for the full scoop on what I want from the new (and 3G) iPhone.

I want 3G, GPS and Tethering. Being able to use the device as portable storage would be nice also. In crazy land I'd like to be able to set it up as a portable wireless access point, internet from 3G, and allow laptops to connect via wifi and use it's connection. Then have the internal storage show up as a network drive.

I want: 3G, GPS, Tethering, supported 3rd party apps(free-not have to pay for them), (if they don't have an app to use it for a wifi router i want to be able to jailbreak it), WiMax would be great, High Definition would be preferred, Ultra High Definition Video would be unheard of but loved http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_High_Definition_Video , I also really want a higher quality camera with flash(preferably 4-5 megapixels, I want a camera on the front so that you can take pictures of yourself and so that you can video chat, bluetooth, 802.11N wifi, regular headphone jack, reliable battery, the battery should be removable, and finally it should work on more providers and not just AT&T (Verizon would be nice-I like AT&T tho)

I want pretty much what the others want, but I also want the following fixes: 1. When I press "Hang Up", the phone immediately hangs up (I experience this problem on occasion). 2. Better email capability (it auto-deletes emails and only keeps the most current - I want to manage emails myself) 3. Better battery life 4. Built-in chess game so I don't have to go to the internet to play 5. Multi-task capability - sometimes when it's downloading emails it locks up and I can't do other tasks 6. Make emails be able to use cover flow capability (turn them sideways) 7. Improve the mapping capability - it's a cool feature but could be even better with a little tweaking 8. Add a way to skip through cover flow mode faster, particularly when you have a lot of albums loaded 9. Make the weather button on the homepage show real time temperature for the home city in lieu of a fixed 73 degrees and sunny 10. I really like the idea of being able to use the internet connection with my laptop, particularly when I'm in a hotel that charges for internet, but only if it had a faster network speed.

I want to be able to use the iPhone with my existing AT&T "blue" account that I have had with the company for over seven years. I like the plan, minutes and price. I'll pay the extra $20 for the data plan. But please AT&T, don't make me move over to a more expensive "orange" plan just because I want to change to a new phone!

Being reasonable... I would just like tethering, GPS, and 3G... some of the ideas here are rediculous for a cell phone3 unless you want it to be 4 inches think with an enormous battery

Kent, you can use the battery for 3 or 30 years. It lasts longer than you say.

Umm, yeah... not to spoil the party or anything, but uh... has anyone seen this mythical device of splendor actually run the mighty obstacle course that is the FCC? no? oh... well, I'll just stay current on these rumors just to be safe.
