The other Microsoft-Apple battle

Everyone likes to talk about the battle between Microsoft and Apple on the OS front, but that seems like old hat to me. Sure, there's certainly a battle being waged in that space, but is it really as hotly contested as some want to believe? Call me when Mac OS X hits 20 percent market share.

But there is one battle raging between Apple and Microsoft that many people don't even see. No, it's not in the MP3 player market where the iPod reigns supreme, it's in the home entertainment business. More specifically, the battle being waged pits the Apple TV against the Xbox 360.

Now I know what you're thinking -- "isn't the Xbox 360 a video game console and the Apple TV is a media device"? Yes and no. The description of each device may be correct, but the Xbox 360 description doesn't say enough about the console. Aside from its gaming capabilities, Microsoft's product performs many of the tasks already found on the Apple TV -- streaming entertainment, music, movies and TV show viewing and a hard drive that can store your favorite material.

And with an installed base of over 18 million that easily eclipses the Apple TV's 1.7 million installed base, there's no reason to suggest Microsoft can't win the battle and finally deal the Apple TV its death blow. And here's how it should do it:

Xbox Live Marketplace is an extremely compelling feature on Microsoft's console. Unlike every other console to-date, you have the opportunity to acquire and enjoy movies, music videos and TV shows. Right now, the service has over 300 movies to watch on the marketplace and well over 340 options for TV shows.

Realizing this, why hasn't Microsoft done more to promote the Xbox Live Marketplace and contend that it's a place for people to be entertained without the need for DVD players, extra set-top boxes or even Apple TVs?

Perhaps it's because Microsoft is in a strangely dangerous position. And to make matters worse, the company doesn't want to create an identity for its platform that mimics Sony's mistake when it tried to make the Playstation into more than a gaming console.

In the gaming industry, hardcore gamers usually don't respond well to consoles that try to do too much. Let's face it -- before Sony told the world that the Playstation 3 is really a gaming console, gamers looked at all of its features as the center of the home and asked why they would pay for something that was overpriced and didn't focus enough on gaming.

Aside from that, the Wii is a fantastic case study that shows exactly what the gaming industry is all about. Instead of outstanding graphics or TV shows, most gamers decided that games are the most important element of a video game console and went with the Wii. Left in its dust was Microsoft and Sony -- the two companies that wanted to do more than gaming.

So what's really going on? Is it that people want to only play games on their consoles or is it simply that Microsoft has been incapable of promoting its services better? The answer is probably a little bit of both.

Hardcore gamers are most likely to play games and not worry about TV shows or movies. But as the Xbox Live Marketplace continues to grow, the casual gamers and less-hardcore players will find something they like and propel the service to a more important standing in the business. But alas, word of mouth won't be enough for Microsoft if it wants to supplant the Apple TV and every other media extender in the business.

Instead, it should start promoting the Xbox 360 as the Apple TV of gaming. Instead of ignoring it and watching it grow organically, Microsoft needs to find a way to jump start sales and marketing may be its best bet. Let's face it -- most of the future Xbox 360 owners are looking for something more than gaming and Microsoft is the only company that can provide it.

If nothing else, the Apple TV has shown that some people want the kind of functionality it provides. But if given the chance to eliminate one box in their home entertainment center in favor of an Xbox 360 that does everything an Apple TV can do, wouldn't people choose to do just that?

Microsoft is on to something with its media extender capabilities and the Xbox Live Marketplace. But until it starts telling the world that its console can do everything an Apple TV can do, it'll be the forgotten platform in a growing market. And when the market finally booms, Microsoft could be behind the pack if it doesn't change its tactic and get moving.

Live Marketplace? Are you kidding me? Apple TV serves as a gateway to the ITunes store....which actually accepts straight monetary transactions and not some whackadoodle "microsoft points" system. Oh and it also lets you purchase and rent tons of movies and television, browse to purchase over 6 million songs and subscribe to podcasts AND keeps all of this media in sync with your computer and ipod. Not only that but if I'm in the market for a set-top box, I'm looking for something designed to be inconspicuous and Apple TV wins that contest hands down. The 360 is big and fugly compared to the Apple TV and it an outright power hog.

XBox 360 is a damned good gaming console and almost everyone that purchases one does so with that in mind. Apple TV isn't marketed directly to this crowd but to those that are most likely already iTunes customers and are simply looking for a way to bring their iTunes experience to their television.

Furthermore, how can you call something an Apple TV 'killer' when the device is hardly established in it's market to begin with?

Seriously. I have to strongly disagree here. you state, and I quote: "...with an installed base of over 18 million that easily eclipses the Apple TV's 1.7 million installed base...." I would like to know how many of those 18 million customers wouldn't give a hoot is the Xbox Live Marketplace, and all the "set top box" features went and jumped of a bridge tomorrow. People bought the Xbox 360 because its a fabulous gaming system, and maybe the features added could be a bonus. BUT THEY CAN'T! They can't because they need to build a new community from scratch, Apple has the LARGEST music/tv/movie(download & rental mind you) selling community on the planet at the disposal of the Apple TV. Microsoft needs to get its act together and start creating products that are just plain better than what they're offering now. They need their products to look cooler, work more cohesively, and have a large enough community to attach their devices to, to be successful. If they don't then the titan will fall, and all the world will cheer.

I disagree about the Wii leaving the other two in the dust. Specificaly because you said that the Wii only focused on games. No, the Wii focused on casual games and a cheap selling point. The 360 and PS3 actually focused on the traditional gamer. The Wii is nothing more than a fad.

To the main point of the article... The 360 could definately be an Apple TV killer. Im more or less a "hardcore" gamer. But I love the market place, I would love to see the long rumored netflix partnership. If they spent more time on the Marketplace, it would be truly great.

As for Microsoft losing... What in the heck are you talking about? The Wii is a fad, the PS3 is mediocre till MGS4 comes out, Xbox Live alone makes the 360 the only true, next-gen sysytem. You have no idea what you are talking about.

The xbox 360's media features are great when they work. But it does feel like an afterthought to me right now. It ties in well with media center but it doesn't feel as polished as apple tv. Although I pretty much hate all things apple... I will admit that apple tv is currently the best option for what it does. Although I don't really see any reason why anyone would want to buy the device.

I whole-heartedly agree with you Don. I personally bought a 360 Elite as a media hub (HD gaming was icing on the cake). I have had a wireless SD media center extender for years that I use with my Media Center PC and I love the experience. I wanted another extender that would support HD that I could connect to my HDTV ... the Xbox360 does that very well. I wanted a high-definition disc player ... at the time, the HD-DVD add-on was the least expensive HD disc player available. I wanted access to downloadable high-definition content ... Xbox Live. I like having access to all my recorded television, music, pictures and home video from multiple locations in the house.

Alas, it is not perfect. There currently is not a great solution for an HD tuner for Media Center unless you want to buy a new PC and use CableCard (is Apple TV a DVR?). What happened to the IPTV/DVR Xbox they were talking about in Jan 2007? Xbox Live HD content is too expensive and not the same quality as HD-DVD/Blu-ray. If they could offer an unlimited monthly subscription service like Nextflix/Blockbuster I would jump in a second. Until then, I'll stay with Netflix/Blockbuster.

In summary ... in combination with my Media Center PC I have a multi-room HD media center extender including a DVR (without a monthly fee), a great gaming console, a high-definition disc player, access to online HD content, game demos, TV shows, etc in one unit.

Microsoft needs to fullfill the IPTV tuner/ HD-DVR console to eliminate the set top box, offer a Blu-ray add-on (for the current 18 million owners), add a browser to the 360, make Xbox Live content more reasonable. I cooler/quieter console wouldn't hurt either!
