Take the smartphone survey

Do you own a smartphone?

I put out a similar question earlier this week regarding the iPhone to a One More Thing panel of Apple users, but I've decided to broaden the scope. I'm trying to get a sense of how many people own a smartphone, or are in the market for one, and the kinds of things they want to see in an advanced phone. This is not going to be conducted in the most scientifically accurate fashion, but what the hell, let's take your pulse.

Got one of these? Think they're too pricey? Let us know.

We'll define smartphone pretty liberally as a BlackBerry/Treo/BlackJack/N95 class of device that can surf the Web, run applications, get e-mail, and place calls. But phones like the original Razr that could sort of access a basic version of the Internet aren't going to count for the purposes of this discussion.

Leave your answers in the comments below, or send me an e-mail at tom dot krazit at cnet dot com and tell me your smartphone story. Here are some variations on the questions I posed to the Apple group, tailored for a broader audience.

  • Do you own a smartphone?
  • If so, what type? Do you like it?
  • If not, why? (Cost, lack of interest, locked into wireless contract, etc.)
  • Are you considering a smartphone purchase in the near future? Which device are you thinking about buying, and why?
  • What's the one thing that convinced you to buy a smartphone?
  • If you do have a smartphone, do you use it more for business or for personal activities?
  • Does Apple's plan to bring enterprise-friendly features to the iPhone make you more interested in buying one?

Please send those responses as soon as you get a chance. I'd like to be able to share the results by the end of the week.

As always, thanks for taking the time.

Blackberry for me
by chillaxed March 11, 2008 12:53 PM PDT
I got the Blackberry Pearl 8100 and i love it. I just wished that i didn't go with T-Mobile. They dont get service inside large concrete buildings. A.K.A schools. but besides that i wished that i wasn't locked into a 2 year contract. I wished that i got the iphone. Because all i find in my pocket is my wallet my 5g ipod and my blackberry. I really wished is i had an ipod + phone. Well there is the iPhone. Well i can live with it with a thin iPod upgrade. (iPod touch)

Do you own a smartphone? - Yes If so, what type? Do you like it? - BlackJack II. It is ok. Does everything that I need to do. However, UI is horrible and Sync with Mac is very bumpy. Are you considering a smartphone purchase in the near future? Which device are you thinking about buying, and why? - Yes. iPhone 3G. I would buy it because of MS Exchange compatibility plus 3G. I may have to wait for a year for 3G, but I think it is worth the wait. Since, BlackJack I, I think 3G is a must for a new phone. What's the one thing that convinced you to buy a smartphone? - Ability to check and send work e-mail (MS Exchange) If you do have a smartphone, do you use it more for business or for personal activities? - Work first, but I do use it for personal use such as listening music, podcast, sling player, etc. Does Apple's plan to bring enterprise-friendly features to the iPhone make you more interested in buying one? - Definitely. Without the enterprise features, I would not consider buying iPhone at all.

Waiting on the Xperia
by byrd8520 March 11, 2008 1:23 PM PDT
Do you own a smartphone? - Used to, Blackjack If not, why? - Too bulky, poor UI. Are you considering a smartphone purchase in the near future? Which device are you thinking about buying, and why? - Yes. The Xperia if I like the hands on. I need a tactile qwerty keyboard and am, sadly, too style conscious(the Xperia is a beauty). The widescreen looks good for browing and email. Interested in Android but dont want to wait for quality handsets to come out of it. What's the one thing that convinced you to buy a smartphone? Internet browsing, organization, and email. Does Apple's plan to bring enterprise-friendly features to the iPhone make you more interested in buying one? - No. Apple is too restrictive. I want GPS, MMS, and bluetooth A2DP and have to have 3G. I need tactile buttons as well as a touchscreen. Also the iPhone will never inteface as well as a windows mobile devices with my outlook accounts. Sorry Apple, no dice.

(Cost, lack of interest, locked into wireless contract, etc.)n/a * Are you considering a smartphone purchase in the near future? Which device are you thinking about buying, and why? Yes, I get really crappy service with the blackjack so I'm thinking about picking up an N95 or 96 as soon as its available for ATT or may have to pick up an unlocked version * What's the one thing that convinced you to buy a smartphone? The ability to do advanced functions such as word and excel as well as mobile internet, weather, and news reports. And if you have unlimited multimedia package IM is best and online movies * If you do have a smart phone, do you use it more for business or for personal activities? personal and school * Does Apple's plan to bring enterprise-friendly features to the iPhone make you more interested in buying one? no, I picked one up early release and took it back. My hands are large so texting is difficult as well as the ridiculous sky high phone plan

The Newest Treo is called the iPhone
by jimmyjoe March 11, 2008 1:34 PM PDT
I own the Treo 700p. I seriously luv it and the Verizon service. The only thing it lacks is WiFi connectivity. I can browse the web, read and respond to email from all six of my eMail accounts, download or stream music and/or podcasts, play MP3's (4GB worth), chat on all four major IM's, Google Maps, Camera, Video Camera, watch video podcasts. In other words, almost everything the iPhone does. The iPhone 3G is my planned purchase. The Wifi capability, the better UI, integration with iTunes, and having a fresh developer environment (that developers actually want to code to) are the driving factors for my choice. The reason I use a smart phone is that it does everything I need. I actually use every one of the features I outlined above - every day. I own it personally, but use it for both business and personal uses. The enterprise features are an important direction for the iPhone. Making them secure enough for most CIO's will be challenging. They have no personal impact on me.

Smartphone: Samsung SCH-i730 Likes/Dislikes: It was free with a contract I was going to get anyways. The phone is buggy though (discontinued model). Wifi is useless on the phone, and I can't afford a data plan. The iPhone, on the other hand, is smart and intuitive, and if it can get Wifi to work anything like the iPod Touch, it'll be in good shape. Future Purchase: I've got my eye on whatever might come with Android, but it's too far away to commit to anything. I don't want to switch from Verizon ATM, since in-calling saves me loads of cash. Business/Personal Use: All personal. I don't even use email on it. Just phone features and small apps. Apple's Plan: Maybe if they made the phone really cheap, then I'd buy one.

Moto Q9M No plans to purchase new smartphone in near future Better email and internet access; full QWERTY keyboard for Pretty even split between business and personal use, but if I chose one, its 51 percent personal Cost is still the prohibitive factor for the iPhone
