Samsung kills HD DVD/Blu-ray combo player

It's becoming clear that early adopters of the HD DVD video format will find fewer and fewer products that will play their discs.

Samsung will halt its plans to release the combination HD DVD/Blu-ray player, the BD-UP5500, introduced in January at the Consumer Electronics Show. Samsung issued a statement late Wednesday, saying that though the product "remains a practical solution...the window of opportunity is smaller than it was before. In light of recent announcements, Samsung will not introduce the BD-UP5500 Duo HD Player."

The announcement doesn't come as much of a shock. Even at its launch there were questions whether the product was relevant, and if so, for how long, since just a few days earlier Warner Bros. made its bombshell announcement that it would support Blu-ray exclusively, effectively dooming the HD DVD format.

There are very few options left for owners of HD DVD discs. Last month Toshiba decided to bow out, followed soon by Microsoft's announcement it would no longer produce external HD DVD drives for its Xbox 360 video game console. Samsung has one other combo player and LG Electronics still makes two combo players.

Samsung will, however, keep moving ahead with plans to release its next Blu-ray only player, the BD-P1500, which is still on track for a spring release.

HD DVD Player Option

I guess if you made the miscalculation of buying more than a handful of HD DVD discs, you should probably run to your local store and buy a spare HD DVD player or two for back up. I'm thinking about it...discs are already 1/2 price on most web site, and there are still some GREAT combo (DVD on side / HD DVD the other) films being released. American Gangster, the Jesse James' flick, Michael Clayton, and several others.

They are screwed up although I waited myself....

They should not abandon their own. Rotten eggs I say. I waited though so I'm OK. RE HDTV, my wife said wait. She didn't know why but I said OK as I didn't relish the thought of wrestling with an old 36" CTV screen that weighed more then me into the garbage. Now everyones got below spec HDTVs pushing all the buttons when the latest ones have most of the problems ironed out regarding format (picture dimensions) 120hz screens etc. I think my wife and I will go out and pick up a Blue Ray and Brand new Hi-def and new HDTV. What about the junk..........

Is HD-DVD ROM dead too?
by AnthonyNYC March 7, 2008 9:12 AM PST
I know the studios probably won't release any new HD-DVD's in USA, who know internationally at this point, but what about HD-DVD burners for PC's and the ones sold in Japan?
Aren't blank discs going to continue to be produced for data storage etc... Personal home movie recording?
That would be intersting to see.
If I can get a cheap burner now, i would to burn home movies to play back on my HD-DVD player.

And buying a second player as insurance for $69 is a good idea, repair insurance would cost as much on a bluray unit now.
