Get unlimited local and long-distance calling for 20 bucks a year

(Credit: MagicJack)

Need a second phone line? How about a dedicated business line for your home-based enterprise? A cheap way to make calls while traveling the world? Look no further than the MagicJack, quite possibly the coolest gizmo of 2007.

All you do is plug the little guy into a USB port. It automatically installs its own software: a nifty little dialer/address-book app. (During the initial setup, you get to choose your own local number for inbound calls.) Now just plug any corded or cordless handset into the MagicJack's standard RJ-11 jack and presto, you've got a dial tone. And voice mail. And three-way calling, caller ID, etc. You can also use a headset if you're traveling and don't want to schlep that bulky old Princess phone.

The MagicJack costs $40, which includes a year's worth of unlimited local and long-distance calls. (Free international calls to other MagicJack users, too.) After that, you'll pay just $20 per year. I've tried this thing, and let me tell you: It rocks. It's way easier to use than Skype, way cheaper than Vonage, and way cool to boot.

Is this too good to be true?

I'm intrigued and tempted to give it a try. I wonder if this company will be around for the long haul or disappear without warning (like Rocketboom)? Definitely a huge savings (even over my current VoIP setup).

MagicJack is right

I caught wind of this gadget a month and a half ago and ordered it immediately thinking what I have I got to lose?
I could not be happier with its ease of set-up, ease of use, etc. I purchased it as a back-up to my ATT service which is spotty at best near my home. The last thing I wanted was another winter of standing in my driveway, one leg up in the air, one arm behind my back trying to get a signal and freezing my butt off. Highly recommend ***** Stars

Is this device limited to only US/Canada/Europe or will it work in other countries too?

Very little support
by techm November 19, 2007 6:23 AM PST
A few co-workers in my company started trying to use the magic jack and got a couple of their customers using it. after a while we have had started to have problems with the USB device not working with our phones. it comes up with a message somthing like "plug magic jack into USB" the user of the device tried all their USB ports (3 since it was a laptop) and no success. Another one of our technicians was working on this and found that there was very little tech support.

Only as good as the company

It's a service, not a product, really. It would be great to see them thrive, but telecom is littered with companies that couldn't sustain their business.

It is a good product for those who do not mind having a USB dongle hanging from the computer or need a little more advanced features like importing phone numbers from outlook.

I am currently using it and it is really cheap and does all that it claims to do, but pray that the dongle does not break or stop working, coz the service is not available without it! The moment you take it out of the USB, it is over! I found this annoying, but it is probably good for those who use Desktops and keep it switched on all the time. the support is spotty with very restricted hours, but I dont think you might need a lot of it, coz it is very easy to use. Remember that there is no way to work without a computer that is switched on either.

I guess that I might give this to my parents and get back on skype :)

I too had problems similar to yours. I plugged it into a POWERED USB HUB and have not had any problems since

magic jack deception
by decevied March 17, 2008 6:54 PM PDT
They say its FREE after you pay for a year AND AFTER you receive the unit and are out shipping costs and return costs if you dont accept, you get hit with all kinds of unacceptable computer intrusions into the registry to install cookies, monitoring abilities, and forced terms of agreements and privacy policy that MUST be agreed to in order to use the unit. You are required to allow opt-in advertisements etc from magic and "their" partners", Ha!You get all this for "FREE" whether you want it or NOT!
In my opinion the magic jack is an insult, intrusive, opportunistic, deceptive, program - period - - - Nothing free there! Even after paying for it, magic jack uses you and your computer for "FREE" as a free advertising lane into your computer and phone!!
Do I have it all wrong ???
