Samsung regains TV lead; Vizio back to No. 2

A sense of order has been restored to the North American TV market this quarter.

A few months after newcomer Vizio stunned the flat-panel television industry by ranking No. 1 in market share for the second quarter of 2007, the old stalwarts have reclaimed their positions. Samsung moved back to No. 1 in overall flat-panel shipments with 11.8 percent of the total market, according to DisplaySearch. Vizio fell to No. 2 with a 10.2-percent share, down from 12 percent the previous quarter. The rest of the list includes Sharp at 10 percent, Sony at 8.6, and Funai (which makes the Sylvania brand) at a 7.2 percent share.

Samsung was able to regain its position because it has a strong presence in both the liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma markets. Vizio is ranked No. 2 in LCD, but not in the top five of plasma vendors. Another key difference is Samsung sells mostly through national retailers, while Vizio's products have been popular in club stores. That's important because club stores tend to sell TVs consistently all year long, while major retailers see seasonal spikes in sales, usually related to holidays and televised sporting events.

"That national chains typically would gain share in the holiday season so you'll see a lot of sell in in the third quarter," said Ross Young, president of DisplaySearch, an industry analysis firm that tracks TV shipments.

It was suspected by some that Vizio's bump last quarter may have been a one-time thing. The company told News.com earlier this month that both Costco and Sam's Club ordered higher-than-normal shipments from the TV maker.

But Vizio's drop in market share is more likely due to the fact that Samsung also sells more TVs with 1080p resolution, a category that's becoming very popular and more affordable, said Young. Vizio is more heavily invested in 720p, he noted.

Sony also made a much better showing in the third quarter. After a disastrous second quarter in which it fell from third to sixth place among TV vendors, the Japanese electronics giant is back with strongest overall growth (up 108 percent from the previous quarter) of any TV maker. That brings it to 8.6-percent market share, good enough for fourth place.

The key to Sony's success this time around was a bevy of new products and better targeted TV lines, including those made especially for Wal-Mart and Target, said Young.

"They were really aggressive with new products," said Young. Besides moving toward selling more large LCD TVs and fewer rear-projection sets, Sony also introduced entry level 52-inch set that "did really well" throughout the quarter, he added.

But what does this all mean for the upcoming holiday shopping season? According to DisplaySearch, the best deals will likely come from Sharp in LCD sets between 19 and 26 inches, Vizio in the 32- and 37-inch categories, and on TVs from most brands between 32 and 42 inches.

Why is it when a Korean company or an Asian company for that matter gets a little good news, it's like WOW Vizio really does bite the BIG ONE! Give me a break , if it weren't for Vizio the major Asian companies would have never started to lower their prices. Admit it. Vizio does not put out a bad product, but they sure are snubbed and discredited whenever the occasion to do so arises! One of the reasons Samsung is back as Numero Uno, which by the way I could care less, is because Vizio has not been allowed to compete with them at Big Outlets like Best "I'm KING of the world" Buy, and most big box retailers and Avande Garde retailers won't pick-up or sell the Vizio brand! Believe me, Circuit City is the only one who recognizes Vizio and their potential and actually sells them. Vizio has tries to move into Best Buy and all the other "cliche" marketers, But noooooooooooooo
they won't allow that. Gee, I wonder how much Sony, Samsung, Sharp, and all the other Asian market manufacturers have to do with that! It almost makes me giddy inside when I see Vizio, a very young Californian company; oh yea that would be buying American, creating shock waves across the consumer electronics industry......... Don't get me wrong, Samsung and other Asian companies have come a full circle when it comes to engineering and quality. I believe Samsung makes some of the nicest 1080P LCD's around today. But how long ago was it that if you bought Samsung, you were purchasing inferior electronics? 15 years? I bought my first LCD TV this year, it was a 32" Vizio, mainly because I am one of the blue collar worker bees that can't throw $$ around and secondly once I tweaked my Vizio in with my Avia set-up DVD, I could hardly tell the difference from any other LCD! Vizio had a 76% jump in sales compared to the 2nd quarter sales of same time 2006! GO VIZIO GO! Just give them time and they will be the next Sony! Please just don't make such a BIG deal out of these rankings! I think most Americans are starting to see the picture and it's VIZIO!
By the way read the small print of the Asian HDTV companies warrentees, they can't even come close to VIZIOS! With Vizio if 1, that's right, 1 pixel fails it's considered bad and is serviced. By buying mine at Sam's Club if it goes out (again only one I mind you), I get a completely new TV!
Now that's American value!! Ask the fancy dressed salesman at the other outlets what Samsungs, Sonys, Sharps, or any of the other TV's warranttes are and then you won't be laughing so loud! Your lucky if you get 6 months parts and labor and 6 months labor and you pay for the parts. oh and you also have to send it in and WAIT! But that's not all, they won't even service the TV until 3 or 4 pixels go out. That's what they consider serviceable..........I mean, they are so GOOD you can live with a few dead pixels, until they reach 3 or 4. Right? Disclaimer, I do not work for or am affiliated with this company out of Irvin, Calif, I just feel like someone sound be the voice of reason here. Just in the past 3 or 4 years, Vizio has picked up several awards including "Sound & Vision's Editors Choice Award". If I hear one more person say that Vizio is JUNK or makes JUNK, then I know this country is in BIG trouble and we have raised the white flag!

Yes you are correct, Samsungs stuff was bad 15 yr. ago, but they did came a long way. Well, you'll have to pay for your Vizio repair and soon.
My 37" lasted 1.5 yrs.
Nobody wants to work on it now.
