Canon PowerShot G9 hits 12

Despite the plethora of cheap dSLRs on the market, there's still room for some all-in-one, relatively compact enthusiast cameras--at least that's what seems to keep Canon's PowerShot G series going year after year. The latest model, the PowerShot G9, replaces the G7; the model naming skips a digit, lest it be confused with the more economically inclined G8 summiteers.

Key specs:
  • 12 megapixels
  • f/2.8-to-4.8, 35mm-to-210mm-equivalent (6X) optically stabilized lens
  • Raw file support
  • 3-inch LCD
  • Digic III image processor

Still smarting from users' response to its having dropped raw-format support form the G7, Canon reinstates support with the G9. The 12-megapixel sensor is the same as that used by the new A650 IS, as is Digic III image processor. It uses the same lens as its predecessor, which we found had quite a bit of distortion at the 35mm-equivalent end.

Canon expects to ship the PowerShot G9 in late September for $499.

They left off the articulating LCD????????
by Herbal Ed August 20, 2007 11:49 AM PDT
What, no articulating LCD? Major bummer. This feature is so useful for low-to-
the-ground shots and for shooting over the head of crowds, etc. Plus when
folded in for storage it fully protects the screen from damage, scratches, etc.

I think the articulating LCD is one of the best features ever to reach a camera. I
have so been looking forward to a new Can G-series camera ... but now that it's
here, I won't ... actually, can't ... but it. I'll just stick to what I have ... with it's
articulating screen.

Glad to see raw mode back.

Reason for it not being called G8 is because I think GM has the copy right for it as it is being used in the upcoming Pontiac G8 sedan.

end of the g series
by cardfan1212 August 20, 2007 4:31 PM PDT
It kind of stopped with the G6. Shame really. I had hoped they would've it back up with the G8 (G9 whatever)..but it's not to be...

Give me a G6 with an updated digicIII processor and improved lens..not more megapixels. And definitely not this 12mp piece of garbage. No more G's...may as well get an elph..

No more waiting Mr. Articulator LCD......

I just ordered the new Canon Powershot A650. 12Mp AND an articulating LCD. Has everything I'd want from the G9 and has the articulating LCD....THIS is the one to get.

Strange that CRAVE neglected this one....THIS is the one to get that genuinely sits between the dSLR and the point-and-shooters. I would definitely vote for the A650 over the G9. Once you have the articulating LCD you never want to go back!

Almost... but no cigar

There were 2 features of the G-series that won me over years ago: 1) the flip-out LCD and 2) the hot shoe. I find it critical to have an external flash and hardly ever use the internal one. I agree the A650 looks great -- all the important G9 features. But they forgot the hot shoe !! I can't win.
