Photos: GM, Transformers' product placement marketing match

Imagine you're a huge automobile manufacturing company. (Imagine harder! You're a complex of buildings, factories, offices and... Oh, never mind. Bad metaphor.)

OK, specifically: Imagine you're a marketing exec at GM. Now imagine the ginormous year-end bonus you're going to get as a result of your collaboration with Paramount Pictures and toy-maker Hasbro on this summer's Transformers movie. Are you imagining swimming in cash? Good job.

All of the Autobots--the "good guy" Transformers battling to keep humans safe from the "bad guy" Decepticons--are robots that turn into vehicles manufactured by General Motors. It's not hard to imagine the toy people, the car people and the movie people all toasting each other's success this summer, as they co-brand cars, toys and related products.

Check out our slide show of vehicles "starring" in the film from this spring's promo event hosted by GM and Paramount. Like any other movie stars, they got their own red carpet treatment.

Ok now in this interpretation of the transformers all of the autobots(good guys) were vehicles made by GM. I just find it harsh that they decided to make Barricade, the only decepticon featured as a car, a saleen mustang. This is an obvious shot at ford. another thing i noticed, was when the autobots chose their vehicular forms jazz was at a GM dealership and chose the solstice. this is fine if it were just a pontiac dealership(although the new GTO definitely has superior performance in every way), but right next to the solstice was a Cadillac XLR. Now if someone were to walk into a dealership and be able to pick any car they wanted would they chose a 177HP car over a 350HP car. i doubt it, plus the xlr looks so much better anyways.

How Mazda Trumped Pontiac's Product Placement

Great observations Seth. GM's been successfully running these types of programs over the last couple years. However, here is an example how Mazda got one over on them back in the day: http://www.ymarketing.com/blog/ I really think they could better integrate other forms of media into these overall programs :).
