Well, it's about gosh-darn time. T-Mobile Dash owners can finally get their hands on some Windows Mobile 6 goodness now that T-Mobile has officially announced the availability of the software upgrade. Starting tomorrow, Dash owners can go to T-Mobile.com and download the WM6 Standard Edition update for free. Among other things, the new OS brings:

  • Easier e-mail setup and an e-mail search function
  • Support for popular IM clients including AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, and Windows Live Messenger
  • Full Microsoft Office Mobile suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) with editing capabilities
  • New Calendar ribbon

Woo hoo! Upgrade successful

We got an advanced release of the software update and had no problems downloading or installing it to our Dash (look for our slide show tomorrow). Overall, the process took about 15 minutes, and we were able to synchronize our data, work on Office documents, set up our Yahoo e-mail account on the device, IM, and more. We think it's worth the upgrade, and why not? It's free. Just remember to back up your data from the Dash to your computer before you get started.

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--T-Mobile USA, Inc. today announced that T-Mobile Dash? customers will be the first in the U.S. to download and experience the benefits of the new Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 software. Starting tomorrow, May 4, T-Mobile Dash customers can upgrade from Windows Mobile 5.0 to Windows Mobile 6 via a free desktop download available directly from T-Mobile.

Designed by HTC and available exclusively from T-Mobile, the T-Mobile Dash is the first device in the U.S. to be powered by Microsoft Windows Mobile 6, offering faster access to contacts; the ability to view and edit Microsoft Office documents; even richer Web, e-mail and messaging experiences; and access to Microsoft Windows Live for Windows Mobile ? a set of Windows Live services ? uniquely designed to work with Windows Mobile-powered devices, such as the T-Mobile Dash.

?T-Mobile is focused on finding new and richer ways to help our customers stay connected to the people that matter most,? said Leslie Grandy, vice president, product development, T-Mobile USA. ?As the first company in the U.S. to offer the increased functionality of Microsoft Windows Mobile 6, T-Mobile continues to build on the already great communication experience for T-Mobile Dash customers and our promise to help people ?Stick Together.??

?The T-Mobile Dash provides the perfect combination of a thin design, dynamic wireless connectivity and, with Windows Mobile 6, the most powerful mobile software,? said Todd Achilles, vice president of HTC America. ?We are pleased to be offering customers this upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.?

The T-Mobile Dash provides quick and convenient access to personal and professional e-mail, and all four major instant messaging providers ? AOL®, Yahoo!®, Windows Live Messenger and ICQ(a). With the addition of Windows Mobile 6, customers now have the ability to view e-mail messages in their original rich HTML format with live links to Web sites, which means text and images are displayed as they would be on a PC, whether from a Web-based account such as Windows Live Hotmail or from a myriad of other popular service providers.

?People want a phone that not only makes it easy to call or message friends and colleagues, but also provides fast access to the information they need,? said John O?Rourke, general manager, Mobile Communications Business, Microsoft. ?We?re proud to work with T-Mobile to bring the first Windows Mobile 6 phone to the U.S. market, helping customers communicate with friends and colleagues through Windows Live services, e-mail with rich formatting, as well as support and editing for Microsoft Office documents.?

T-Mobile is providing customers with the entire suite of rich Windows Live services to stay connected to those who matter most. Dash customers will enjoy Windows Live Messenger to chat with more than one person at a time and to express themselves through emoticons; Windows Live Hotmail that is up-to-date and pushed directly to the device; all of their contacts in a unified, presence-enabled list; Live Search to quickly and efficiently search the Web for news, local businesses and entertainment, directions, maps, images, and more; as well as Windows Live Spaces to access links to friends? spaces within contact cards and send photos directly to their space from their mobile device.

T-Mobile Dash offers the unique myFavesSM experience(a), a fun and easy-to-use phone interface, which features images of the five people that matter most as well as unlimited national calling to those five U.S. phone numbers (excluding toll-free and 900 numbers). myFaves provides access to a straightforward communications menu for effortless e-mail, text and multimedia messaging with just one click.
