Don't buy an Xbox 360...

Xbox 360: back in black?

... at least for the next six weeks. By then, the Xbox 360 "version 2" may finally be available. It seems that Game Informer magazine is reporting in its April issue that an upgraded 360 will soon be hitting store shelves, with at least some of the long-rumored goodies: 120GB hard drive (six times the current model's capacity), HDMI output, and a sweet black paint job. Kotaku (where we snagged the Game Informer page scan shown here) has confirmed with the magazine's editor that the story is legit, not an April Fool's joke. And Engadget followed up with "trusted sources" who verify the crux of the story, as well as fleshing out some other tantalizing details, including the name--Xbox 360 Elite--and whether or not the new version will sport an integrated HD DVD drive and Wi-Fi adapter.

The bottom line: if you're in the market for an Xbox 360, hold off. With the Xbox 360 Elite said to be hitting in late April, it may well be worth the wait.

The things that they do across the lake at the MSFT campus...

Well, at least I've gotten a year's worth of use out of my 360 Premium. If indeed this proves true and most of the listed goodies are really built-in AND Redmond doesn't jack up the price to PS3 levels, then it might be worth the upgrade. I can think of a couple of nephews who would consider this uncle a god if I hand down to them my old 360.

About time!!

Well, if I'm gonna spend the loot for an awesome 1080p Flat screen with HDMI inputs than I expect my video games to take advantage of this. It's just a shame I had to go thru 2 xbox 360s just to finally get an opportunity to buy one that will have the HDMI capability and will probably outlast the 2 older versions. Oh, and if it does have an internal HD-DVD drive, they better accept my clunky add-on as a nice trade-in to offset the cost of the new one.

might be worth it...

as a long time xbox owner, i've held off on a 360 because of the lack of HDMI, the original lack of HD-DVD and the overheating problem...MS did rush the 360 and it will be interesting to see if this is the 360 that should have been introduced originally...

will it have the 65nm chips to run cooler?!?! will the HDMI be v1.3 like the PS3?!?! and why not support the horse you have in the race and include the HD-DVD drive as standard???

note to MS -- if this is truly the 360 Elite, give it the stones it needs to stand toe to toe with the PS3 without having to nickel and dime your customers...

A Definite Improvement
by Brandon5134 March 22, 2007 8:31 AM PDT
I wasn't really planning on buying a 360. But all of these upgrades sure sound nice. As long as Microsoft doesn't raise the pricetag too much, i might consider. It doesn't look as sleek as the ps3. It's finish just isn't too attractive too me. also, they need to put more than one silver accent on the console, cause it just looks weird with the disc drive silver. to plain. an overal improvement though.

Built in HD DVD drive?
by NoSuckaHere March 22, 2007 10:37 AM PDT
The article doesn't mention if this console will has an HD DVD player. There's not point of an HDMI output if you can't play 1080P HD DVD's nor 1080P HD games??? I guess you could download HD content it might be worth it, but 120GB = less than 10 movies in HD (half of that for HD games)...Doesn't make sense to me.

Don't expect price to stay the same
by Jcmagic6160 March 22, 2007 3:14 PM PDT
I was getting ready to buy the Xbox 360, when someone at Gamestop told me I should wait for the new one to come out. They told me it would cost about $475.00 for the New one with the bigger harddrive. It sounds like it will still be well worth the Extra $75.00, Can't wait until it hits the shelves. I hope it won't be as hard to get as the nintendo wii was, but for $250.00 the Wii is an excellent purchase.

If this is what they say it is...

This could be the system to beat them all again. I'm a curent PS3 fan besides from the fact that XBOX 360 has better games but if the XBOX 360 Ellite can match up to the PS3 with an HD DVD player 120 gb hard drive and some other features that its curently lacking I'll buy it for sure because I'm a fan of the XBOX and I'd love to buy a 360 especialy if its better then a PS3:)

Here is some info on this system
by extirpator March 23, 2007 7:02 AM PDT
First the price tag is suposed to be $495, and the only things you get over the premium version are 1. Black case 2. 120Gb HD 3. HDMI

There is No built in HD-DVD drive and No Wifi. To get those it's $200 and $100 respectivly.

Current Xbox 360 owners will be able to purchase the 120Gb HD for $200 according to the article.

There was no mention of a way to add HDMI to existing Xbox 360's; however, on some forums people are speculating a device may come out in the future. Most feel that if an official HDMI adaptor comes out it will probably list from around $40-50 about the same list price as the official VGA cable.

At this point it is a limited production xbox 360 and they expect to run out by Septemberish.

The first RUMOR is that when this "Elite" box is sold out the Premium 360 will offer the same HDMI output and 120Gb HD, but will be white, and cost $399.

The next RUMOR is that the current Premium 360 will become the new $299 system at the same time.

It should be noted that the system still has not been anounced by Microsoft, and that Rumors are just Rumors. If all of the Rumors are true, then this means a fully equipped 20Gb 360 with a HD-DVD drive could be gotten for the exact same price as a current 20Gb PS3, and a 120Gb system with a HD-DVD drive could be gotten for the same price as a 60Gb PS3 or a 20Gb PS3 that was upgraded with a 120Gb HD. The diference being that the 60Gb PS3 would come with Wifi and the other two 120Gb systems would not. This was presented for console comparison reasons only.

Will the regular 360 drop in price?
by jskrenes March 23, 2007 9:20 AM PDT
I don't think I need that big of a hard drive, and I've pretty much got the money to buy a regular 360. Now I'm wondering if I should hold off and see if this pushes the regular 360 down.

also I believe it run cooler and quieter
by daddosplat March 23, 2007 7:36 PM PDT
its supposed to have the shrunk IBM processor use less power and less heat I dont know if they shrunk the graphics chip down or not but a cooler quieter system would be nice with 1080p game support via hdmi!

Go figure, I just got one

Someone that I know works for Microsoft and got me a sweet deal on the premium system, which I've had for about two and a half months.

I knew this was going to happen.
